It's easy to go along with the popular opinion of many genuine horror fans and to spout the line "Asian horror is where it's at just now". Easy because there's certainly an element of truth to it. Despite starting to cover familiar ground and to provide many quickly-worn clichés we can generally always depend on Asian horror movies to provide some great frights and an atmosphere of dread and unease.

Coming Soon, which is basically the story of a movie actually haunted by the spirit being displayed on cinema screens, is another successful genre product. While it's no classic (and let's not fall into the trap of praising every Asian horror release to the skies, some of them can be just as bland as horror movies from elsewhere) it provides some impressively frightening images that may stay seared into your brain for a long, long time. It's also nice to see this particular sub-genre moved away from the stereotypes we have started to see lately (the put-upon schoolgirls, the phantom lass with the long black hair, etc) while still innovatively blending the spiritual with the modern world.

Director/writer Sopon Sukdapisit does a great job of blending the frights with the unfolding plot with the character moments with the self-awareness inherent in the subject matter. The cast, although personally unknown to me, all do well and there really is not too much to complain about. On the flipside, there really isn't a reason to overly praise things either. Despite the subtle changes we ARE still in familiar territory and although it's a fun central premise and the revelations are well-developed along the way it's simply a little too "been there, done that" to be marked out as anything too special.

Kudos to Sukdapisit also for the occasional moments of surrealism and the movie would certainly cause more of a shiver down the spine if viewed in a cinema environment but, for now, Thailand has given us a decent horror though nothing spectacular on this occasion.

Battle: Los Angeles (also known as Battle: LA and World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles, and formerly known as Battle for Los Angeles) is a 2011 military science fiction war film directed by Jonathan Liebesman, and starring Aaron EckhartMichelle RodriguezMichael PeñaNe-YoDavid PhamRamon Rodriguez and Bridget Moynahan. Released in March 2011, the film is set in modern day Los Angeles and follows a platoon of U.S. Marines during a global alien invasion, and are joined by an Airman and some Army infantry. The events of the film are inspired by the Battle of Los Angeles, a supposed World War II air raid of the city which turned out to be a false alarm caused by several unidentified objects.[4][5][6]

On August 11, 2011, mysterious objects thought to be meteorites crash into Earth's oceans near several major cities. These objects are revealed to be spacecrafts, containing hostile alien forces. The U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton arrive in Los Angeles to defend against alien ground forces and assist in the evacuation of civilians, in preparation for a bombing campaign. Among the military's forces are Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), a U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant. Nantz had planned to retire, but the situation requires him the replace the platoon sergeant of a platoon from "E" Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines.[7]
The Platoon Commander, 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez (Ramón Rodríguez), attends a briefing at a FOB (Forward Operating Base). The platoon's mission is to rescue civilians from a LAPD police station with a three-hour time limit before the Air Force bombs the area. They are ambushed by aliens multiple times and suffer casualties. They also encounter a group of U.S. Army soldiers from the 40th Infantry Division, including an Air Force intelligence Technical Sergeant Elena Santos (Michelle Rodriguez). Eventually, the combined team reaches the police station, finding five civilians inside. A helicopter arrives and attempts to evacuate some of the wounded Marines, but it is destroyed by the aliens upon takeoff.[7]
The Marines commandeer a bus for evacuation. During this ordeal, they learn of the aliens' weaknesses and military tactics; finding that alien infantry have a weak point in the torso, that the alien attack aircraft are remote-controlled drones and the aliens monitor and locate Earth miltary forces through monitoring their radio communications. The Marines speculate that there must be a central command center, and that the destruction of this command center would eliminate control of the alien drones, crippling the enemy forces. On a freeway, the bus is attacked and the Marines begin rappelling the civilians off the side of the freeway. One of the civilians, Joe Rincon (Michael Peña), is wounded after firing on the aliens. Martinez is also wounded and sacrifices himself to destroy an enemy unit by detonating explosives inside the bus, shortly after placing Nantz in command of the platoon.[7]
Nantz leads what remains of the platoon outside the bombing zone, and they rest at a convenience store. A news report speculates that the aliens have attacked Earth for its water supply. The team waits for the bombing to begin, but nothing happens. They arrive at the FOB, only to discover that it has already been destroyed by the aliens, nullifying the airstrike. They decide to head for another extraction point, where a helicopter should be available to evacuate them but Rincon dies before they reach the new extraction point. As they are being evacuated, Nantz spots a large black area on the ground, where electric power seems to be disabled. Nantz believes the black area to be the location of the alien command center, and that it is hidden underground. Nantz disembarks from the helicopter, his platoon follows, planning to find the exact location of the command center so they can call in a missile strike.[7]
Going underground, the Marines confirm the presence of a large alien vessel. They return to the surface and succeed in calling in a missile strike using laser designators. However, the command center remains intact, and rises from the ground. The Marines repel alien forces as more missiles are launched at the hovering command center and, eventually, they are able to destroy it. This disables the alien aircraft in the area, forcing the alien ground forces to retreat.[7]
Soon after, the team is extracted to a temporary base in the Mojave Desert, where they are greeted as heroes for their outstanding bravery. All other cities under attack now plan to emulate their strategy, destroying the alien command center in each city. More forces are being sent to Los Angeles to finish off the aliens there. Despite orders to rest, Nantz and the platoon instead rejoin the fight.[7]

Daddy-Long-Legs (Kidari ajeossi) is a 2005 South Korean romance film. It features a cameo by Hyun Bin. It was one of four Korean movies screened at the 2006International Fajr Film Festival in Iran.[1] The story is loosely inspired by the novel Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster.

Young-mi (Ha Ji Won), is a young woman who has lost her parents and struggling to fend for herself. She receives the assistance of a stranger who pays her university fees and sends her gifts. She affectionately nicknames her benefactor “Daddy-Long-Legs”.
After completing her studies and initially struggling for work, Young-mi eventually obtains her dream job as a program writer in a nationally-syndicated radio station. On top of this, it has been arranged for her to stay rent-free in a nice house that the owner vacated due to health reasons. Young-mi believes that her good fortune is the work of her “Daddy-Long-Legs”.
One day, Young-mi receives an email from the owner of the house. The email was date-stamped to arrive at the house's computer on that specific day, though it was written and sent a year earlier.
The email details a love story written by the unseen owner of the house. The writer confesses that she has secretly been in love with a guy since her school days. In order to be near him, she worked hard to obtain a place in the same course at the institution he was studying in. Although she didn't have the courage to introduce herself, she was happy to see him every day. The writer explains that when he got a job at a radio station, she followed him there. But then she was diagnosed with a terminal disease which would cause her to lose her memory and then die. The writer's greatest fear is not of dying, but of losing her memory, which is why she wrote the email to be sent to herself in the future.
Young-mi is deeply touched by the story and decides to air its contents via the national radio program to locate the young man with whom the owner of the house was in love. The story is serialized and dramatized on the air, quickly becoming an audience favorite.
Meanwhile, Young-mi meets Kim Jun Ho (Yeon Jung Hoon), who works as a librarian in the radio station. They spend time together and Young-mi begins to fall in love with him. Young-mi then discovers that Jun Ho is the love interest mentioned in the email. Young-mi decides to end their relationship, guilty with the knowledge that someone somewhere out there has been in love with him for years.
Young-mi also investigates her “Daddy-Long-Legs”, eventually learning that her current job and accommodations were the decisions of the radio station's director. She confronts him, but it turns out that the director was only acting on behalf of his younger brother, who chose to provide Young-mi with her school fees and asked that she be given her current job and his house to live in. It turns out the director's brother is Jun Ho, who is also the writer of the email. Jun Ho had switched genders when writing the email, and lost all of his earlier memories of Young-mi when they were students together and he loved her from afar; when they met in the radio station's library, it was the first time for both.
Young-mi is devastated by this news. She reconnects with Jun Ho and they spend as much time together before his illness relapses and he dies.

Today My Life Begins

Today My Life Begins Lyrics by Bruno Mars

i've been working hard so long
seems like pain has been my only friend
my fragile heart's been done so wrong
i wondered if i'd ever heal again

ohh just like all the seasons never stay the same
all around me i can feel a change (ohh)

i will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins
a whole new world is waiting it's mine for the taking
i know i can make it, today my life begins

yesterday has come and gone
and i've learn how to leave it where it is
and i see that i was wrong
for ever doubting i could win

ohh just like all the seasons never stay the same
all around me i can feel a change (ohh)

i will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins
a whole new world is waiting it's mine for the taking
i know i can make it, today my life begins

life's to short to have regrets
http://www.elyricsworld.com/today_my_life_begins_lyrics_bruno_mars.html
so i'm learning now to leave it in the past and try to forget
only have one life to live
so you better make the best of it

i will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins
a whole new world is waiting it's mine for the taking
i know i can make it, today my life begins

i will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins
a whole new world is waiting it's mine for the taking
i know i can make it, today my life begins
today my life begins...
